Cosmic Journey

Complete detailed description:

‘Cosmic Journey’ is a performance that focusses on space-themed repertoire for the harp and live-electronics, combined with projections of images from NASA to enhance the audience’s experience. It explores the use of improvisation coming together with voice-overs to tell the story of Kyra Frimout’s grandfather Dirk Frimout, who went on his mission to space in 1992. The pictures that were taken during this mission, are used as the projections for the Cosmic journey. The centre piece of this program is the Stellar Sonata, which was the inspiration for shaping this project. The soundscapes serve as transitions between the pieces of the program and are improvised moments between harp and cello accompanied with a voice-over written and voiced by Kyra herself to tell her grandfather’s story from her perspective.

The program has already been performed in several different settings and of different lengths, in both Canada and The Netherlands. Each program include various pieces by Caroline Lizotte, among which the Stellar Sonata for electro-acoustic harp and electronics, and improvised soundscapes with voice-overs created by Kyra Frimout in collaboration with Samuel Ouellet Mata, with whom Kyra has now formed a duo professionally. The whole program is played electro-acoustically and uses electronic enhancements on both the harp and the cello.

Harp Sirens

Since September 2019, Kyra is part of a group of 6 harpists called the Harpsirens. Together with this harp sextet she plays contemporary music written especially for the ensemble. The ensemble was formed as a collaboration project between the harp department and the composition department of the Royal Conservatory of The Hague. The ensemble has had various concert in different locations. Some recent ones are the Dutch Harp Festival in 2021 and the World Harp Congress of 2022.

Blue Planet Harp Trio

Almost every summer since 2016 Kyra has had concerts in Italy and Switzerland together with the Blue Planet Harp Trio, consisting of herself and the harpists Inge Frimout-Hei and Giada Masella. Performing in various churches and concert locations in the area of the Lago Maggiore, the Trio would play classical music as well as lighter music like musical songs.
